NAGPUR:
A controversy erupted in Nagpur on Sunday over a hoarding put up by PETA India near Liberty Cinema Circle in Sadar, raising awareness about bird flu. The hoarding depicted chickens in a terrifying and misleading manner, creating panic among the general public. Consequently, individuals associated with the poultry industry took photographs of the banner and demanded action against it.
In response, Dr. Mukund Kadam from Nagpur Veterinary College wrote a letter to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Choudhary, urging the removal of the misleading hoarding. He stated that the banner spreads fear and confusion among people.
According to Dr. Kadam, the use of scary and incorrect imagery of chickens in the hoarding is causing unnecessary panic. He emphasized that such misleading visuals and messages, which lack a scientific basis, contribute to misinformation and could severely impact the poultry industry and farmers.
Dr. Kadam acknowledged the importance of raising awareness about bird flu but warned that spreading false information could harm not only the poultry business but also the entire livestock sector. Criticizing PETA, he stated that while the organization works for animal rights, it should not spread misinformation regarding diseases like bird flu.
He urged the municipal commissioner to take appropriate action to prevent the spread of such misleading messages. Additionally, he expressed his willingness to collaborate with NMC to develop a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for accurate awareness regarding bird flu.
The letter has become a topic of discussion on social media, and it remains to be seen what action the Nagpur Municipal Corporation will take in response. Notably, hoardings require prior permission from the NMC before being put up, and proper verification should be conducted to prevent such errors in the future.
